Bear River Trail Race: July 12th 2025
Distances: 10k, Half, 17Miler

10k: 6.2miles, 45ft vert (The Bison)

Race Summary

If you want a great introduction into trail running this 10k is the perfect one. It combines the Bear River greenway with the well groomed trails of the Bear River State Park to give a challenging but achievable experience. You will run through the lush river bottoms and see the breathtaking bear river and all the wildlife that come with it. Don’t forget to stop and check out the Bison and Elk in the park. If you look hard enough you might even see the White Bison.

Race Description

The 10k Race starts at the Bear meadows park in Evanston Wyoming. It starts on the paved Bear River Greenway heading east to the Bear River State Park as you run along right next to the Bear River. You will go under the interstate and enter into the state park. Be sure to look to your left to spot the Bison and if you are lucky the white bison might be out.

After traveling 1.72 Miles on the paved path you will come across the first aid station. Grab some snacks and a quick drink before veering off onto the trails of the Bear River State Park. From there you will head to the west and cross the bridge over the Bear River. After that you will turn to the North and run the Beaver Trail loop and Willow Trail Loop (1 mile total between the two loops). Be sure to pay close attention to the signs and flags as there are many intersecting trails through this section.

You will loop back headed to the south on the same cottonwood trail you took north. You will now be moving into the southern part of the park. Once in the southern part of the park you will take a right hand turn onto the haystack trail. From there you will turn right to run the crane loop. Once completed with that loop you will take another right onto the moose trail which will loop back onto the cottonwood trail from which you had previously turned off.

Once back onto the cottonwood trail you will take another right crossing over the southern bridge over the river and then take a left hand turn headed back to the paved bear river greenway headed Northwest. Once back on the paved greenway (Mile 4.2) look to your right to the pens and you will be able to see the trophy sized elk that are kept in the park. You will then once again pass the aid station you had passed coming in (Mile 4.5). Grab any last minute needs for the final 1.7 miles back on the Bear river Greenway.

Keep coming back the way you came and the finish line is right where you started! Congrats on the finish and enjoy some food and take a load off your feet and relax in the grass.

Half Marathon: 13.1miles, 684ft vert (The Moose)

Race Summary

The half marathon will give you a taste of both the green lush terrain surrounding the Bear River while also adventuring up onto the wyoming bluffs above the Bear river where you will take in the sights of the wyoming plains, high uinta mountain skyline and look down on the meandering Bear river from above.

Race Description

The race starts at the Bear Meadows park and runs along the Bear river greenway for the first 1.7 miles. As you enter into the state park, be sure to look to your left to spot the bison and if you are lucky the white bison might be out. You will then have your first aid station here before turning onto the Bear River State Park trails. I would highly recommend topping off on water and food here as the next aid station will be over 5 miles from here.

You will then turn right and cross a bridge over the bear river and onto the trails of the state park. You will run the next 2 miles through the trails of the state park. Be sure to be on the lookout for lots of wildlife through this section. If you are lucky you might spot a moose, be cautious and give it distance.

After completing this section (Mile 4.7) you will cut up onto the “Rio Oso” trails that are managed by the B.R.O.R.A. foundation. 10k runners will turn back just before this point so be certain to follow the signs and go the directions for the course you signed up for.

Here you will run an hourglass like loop. In this section you will be able to have an unobstructed view of the uinta mountains due south, breathtaking views of the bear river from above, and be in the famous endless sagebrush of the wyoming plains. You will also be running at over 7,000 feet for most of this section.

You will make your way over to the dry hole loop where at the furthest point you will have an aid station. (Mile 7.34) Make sure to fuel up as you start your journey back. This will probably be warming up at this point so be ready for the heat. You will complete the hourglass loop and drop back down next to the Bear River. (Mile 10)

From here you will run back on the same rivers edge trail that you came on and pop out onto the paved Bear River Greenway. Be sure to look to your right as you hit the pavement. If you do, you will see the trophy sized elk that are kept in the park. You will continue on that and come across your last aid station. (Mile 10.9) After topping off your liquids you will finish running back on the paved path the same way you came. The only twist is as you approach the finish line, you will have to run two quick loops around the park with your friends and family being able to cheer you on or run with you for the last mile. You will pass by the finish twice on these loops and on the third time coming to the finish, you will run though it and be done!
